Country Specific Domain Name…any Good?

Most of us, when we want to start a website automatically think of a dot com domain name but since almost all the good ones are already taken we end up buying a country specific domain name. Have you ever wondered how it affects your search ranking?

I am not to sure about how other search engines handle country specific domains but Google clearly gives priority to country wise specific domains on their country search engines.

Have a look at the graphic below which I have taken from my Google Webmaster Tool page, it clearly shows that Google automatically decided that the target country is India as the domain name is India specific (.in)

This also tells you that if you are starting a website which might have a world wide audience, then you better stick to a .com or a .net

Using 301 Redirects for Better Page Ranking

By default, websites / blogs can be accessed by with or without the www in the front of the domain name; however search engines see this as two different domains. One with the www and one without. To avoid content duplicity it is advisable to choose one and to stick with it, this way SE’s can consolidate all links to your domain whether they are with or without the www and give you the maximum link juice.

There are many ways to accomplish this, you can find in detail on this website. You can also use Google Webmaster tools to tell Google your preference so that you are nicely covered in the biggest search engine.
