How to Cloak Affiliate Links on WordPress

Cloaking Affiliate Links If you running a WordPress blog and using different affiliate programs to make money then I is a good idea to Cloak all the outgoing links. Cloaking is simply hiding the affiliate links so that they cannot be tampered with and your sale is not compromised.

This simplest way to do is use the awesome Link Cloaking Plugin, move your mouse over the link and look at the status bar, you will see how the cloaked links looks like.

The plugin is very simple to Install, the instructions are right there on the blog. The one very useful feature is that when you cloak the link, it automatically adds the nofollow tag so that you keep your link juice intact.

Important Note: If you are using SEO urls, i.e. mod rewrite on your blog, then you will have to go to Settings > Permlink Settings and simply press “Save Changes”. This will update your .htaccess with the Cloaking code. This has to be done everytime you upgrade WordPress.

Rel NoFollow Tag

I am sure you must have heard about this a lot. Apparently Google advices you to use this tag whenever linking out to a websites so as to save you from your page rank being drained as well as keeping the link juice from being passed on.

Why was this initiated by Google? A lot of bad websites were getting top ranking in Google searches simply by having a ton of links from every possible source and to keep their search listing credible they came out with the rel=”nofollow” tag.

When should you use it? Whenever linking out from your blog make sure you use the nofollow tag, unless you are sure the website you are linking to does not fall under bad neighborhood.

Personally I would not mind passing on the link juice to websites who have PR 6 and more and therefore not use the nofollow tag for such websites.

The Link Experiment!

As much as I am in favor of getting some good paid links for your blog and investing in some long term free link directories to boost your blog in search engines, for TCC (TheCashCow.in) I will not do any of the two. As a part of my writing articles on TCC, I also want to experiment with things which bloggers would have liked to try to but could not do it because it takes much more time and effort to get the blog going.

I will therefore not submit TCC to any free or paid directory and will experiment in getting a high PR and traffic without those links but all this cannot happen without your help, please use the badges below on your blog and link back to TCC.

I will keep adding new badges to this post periodically.
